In addition to conferring degrees on 2,322 graduates at the bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and doctoral levels, Adelphi awarded honorary doctorates to , founder of president of the Children鈥檚 Defense Fund, and alumna , author and winner of the 2014 National Book Award. 聽聽聽聽
Both Edeleman and Woodson urged the graduates to seek to change the status quo.聽
鈥淎ny nation that fails to prepare most of its children for productive work and life must correct course now, and all of us must be a part of the solution,” Edeleman said. “We have got to have a new movement and it has to be about giving every child a healthy and safe and educated passage to adulthood.鈥
鈥淵ou guys are young; you鈥檙e amazing; you鈥檙e beautiful; you鈥檙e articulate; you have degrees and now you have the power to make the choice to go out and change the world,鈥 Woodson told the graduates. 鈥淪o the question is not what you do with your life but what will you will change because you have that power to create change.鈥
Senator Charles Schumer, who also attended the ceremony, drew cheers from the damp crowd when he tore up the speech he had prepared and simply said, 鈥淐ongratulations to the Class of 2016.鈥

Sophia King 鈥16 a chemistry from Georgetown, Guyana聽who is about to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry at聽The University of California, Los Angeles, said that at Adelphi, 鈥淚 got to do a lot of things that I could only dream of as a kid.鈥
Taylor Groth 鈥16 an All-American soccer player who received a B.A. in Psychology will return to Adelphi鈥檚 for a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology 鈥淭oday is really just to show what I worked for and where I鈥檓 going,鈥 she told Newsday.
