Majoring in graphic design has taught Nicole Cassano that drawing is not just fun. It is also a career.

“From drawing stuff out of the newspaper to working at Redbook and saying, ‘Yeah, I can actually do this.'”鈥撯揘icole CassanoNicole Cassano smiles when she reflects on her journey, from drawing sketches of Garfield and other comic book characters at her kitchen table to landing an internship through at the venerable women鈥檚 magazine in midtown Manhattan.
鈥淚t鈥檚 funny because I didn鈥檛 start off wanting to do graphic design鈥撯揑 had the wrong idea of it,鈥 said Ms. Cassano, a senior from Deer Park, New York. 鈥淚 thought graphic design was just people sitting in a cubicle all day, staring at a computer. But it鈥檚 a creative process. I love it.鈥
Majoring in graphic design in the at Adelphi has taught Ms. Cassano that drawing is not just fun. It is also a career in which she can find her niche.
鈥淚鈥檓 glad I chose Adelphi instead of an art school because Adelphi gives me more options,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want to go to Fashion Institute of Technology and take only art courses. I wanted to learn other things and be well rounded. Adelphi has helped me do that.鈥
requires students to apply for an internship in their senior year. Ms. Cassano searched online and secured an internship for Spring 2014 at Redbook, which is published in the iconic on West 57th Street.
鈥淚 knew I wanted to do something in the editorial field because that鈥檚 my design style,鈥 Ms. Cassano said. 鈥淭he first time I walked into the Hearst Tower, it felt surreal. From drawing stuff out of the newspaper to working at Redbook and saying, 鈥榊eah, I can actually do this.鈥欌
Dale Flashner, M.A. 鈥84, the director of Adelphi鈥檚 graphic design program in the , has no doubt that Ms. Cassano will continue to learn and grow.
鈥淣icole has dedication and drive and, above all else, an amazing work ethic,鈥 Ms. Flashner said. 鈥淚 know I can always count on Nicole.鈥
Ms. Cassano, who interns at Redbook on Thursdays and Fridays, is making valuable contacts that should serve her well after college.
鈥淓verybody collaborates at Redbook鈥攜ou see every step of the creative process,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd working in is exciting. That鈥檚 where the action is. I鈥檓 glad Adelphi鈥檚 program makes internships a requirement. Being able to network and collaborate with people in New York City is the best thing for an up-and-coming artist.鈥
