Long Islander Sandra Martinez is the new Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support program, located in Garden City.
In this role, she will be responsible for Program Coordination of the Breast Education Program, which provides community-based breast cancer outreach, education, and referrals for free or low-cost screenings in underserved communities across Long Island.
Mrs. Martinez, a native of Colombia, received a bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Social Communications and Journalism from Bogota and emigrated to the United States in 1997. For the past 16 years, she has worked for the Child Care Council of Nassau as a bilingual parent counselor, providing information to parents and assisting them to meet childcare needs. In Bogota and in New York, Mrs. Martinez worked as a researcher and writer for various Spanish-language media. 鈥淎s a Latina and as an immigrant woman, I understand the barriers minorities face,鈥� she says. 鈥淏ecause of that, I want to make a difference and help people as best I can.鈥�
Mrs. Martinez has lived in Valley Stream for 19 years with her husband, son, and Golden, their lovely golden retriever dog.

Sandra Martinez, residente de Long Island, es la nueva Coordinadora de Alcance/Contactos del Programa Estatal del C谩ncer y L铆nea de Ayuda y Programa de Apoyo de La Universidad Adelphi, localizado en Garden City. Ella estar谩 a cargo de la Coordinaci贸n del Programa Educativo Sobre la Salud del Seno en , el cual provee alcance comunitario, educaci贸n, referidos para ex谩menes gratuitos o a bajo costo en las comunidades m谩s vulnerables de Long Island.
Sandra es colombiana y obtuvo su T铆tulo Universitario en Comunicaci贸n Social y Periodismo de La Universidad Externado de Colombia. Luego emigr贸 a Los Estados Unidos en 1997. Durante 16 a帽os ella trabaj贸 en el Child Care Council of Nassau como Consejera Biling眉e de Familia, proveyendo informaci贸n a los padres de familia sobre el cuidado infantil. En Bogot谩 y en Nueva York trabaj贸 en diferentes medios informativos de prensa en
espa帽ol. 鈥淐贸mo Latina e inmigrante, comprendo las barreras y dificultades que nuestra comunidad vive cada d铆a.鈥� Ella dice que por esta raz贸n siempre ha tratado de hacer una diferencia positiva ayudando a las personas en lo mejor que pueda.
