National Food Day and United Nations Day

In honor of National Food Day and United Nations Day on October 24, 天美传媒鈥檚听Institute for Social Research and Community Engagement听(iSoRCE), will host Food Day activities on Adelphi鈥檚 main campus, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Food Days are being held across the nation and region and seek to bring together parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, and school lunch providers鈥攖o push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. Co-sponsors also include Adelphi鈥檚 Department of Political Science, Levermore Global Scholars Program, and Amnesty International.

Below are a list of the free activities scheduled on October 24 and offered to the public.

• 天美传媒 Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) Concert Hall, at 7:00 p.m.

  Community Forum鈥擩ust Food?: U.S. Child Labor and Food Insecurity Implications for Long Island and Beyond. The evening will feature the Long Island premiere of the film听The Harvest/La Cosecha听and a conversation with its director U. Roberto Romano.听

  ,听executive produced by Eva Longoria, is the story of the children who work as many as 12 hours a day, six months a year, in the scorching hot sun, without the protection of child labor laws. They are working in our back yard, in America. More than 400,000 migrant child workers in the U.S. journey from their homes traveling from state to state, farm to farm, crop to crop, picking the produce we all eat.听 Many of these children are American citizens.

  Farmers Market鈥擯urchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables

  Underground Caf茅 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
  Iron Chef Competition鈥擯artner with one of our head chefs to create a delicious dish using healthy, local ingredients. The competition is open to Adelphi faculty, staff, and students.

• AU PAC lobby area, all day

  Common Misconceptions about Nutrition鈥攁 media presentation developed by the Adelphi School of Nursing on food myths and facts.

  A campus-wide food memory project. Students, staff, and faculty will be encouraged to post a 鈥渇ood memory鈥� about their favorite food; the importance of the food; and recipe based on your favorite food, to a large board in the AU PAC lobby.

• In partnership with other members of the Nassau County School Wellness Coalition, iSoRCE will host high school听peer-to-peer training听to promote healthy eating, positive body image and physical activity.

The mission of the Institute for Social Research and Community Engagement is to generate actionable knowledge through collaborative social research and to use that knowledge to better understand and address Long Island鈥檚 critical and enduring social issues. Both the research process as well as the information it generates bolster local capacity to improve the health, environmental, social, economic, and cultural conditions of communities across Long Island. iSoRCE, part of Adelphi鈥檚 Center for Health Innovation, is currently concentrating its activities and research in the areas of food, nutrition, and health.
