Summer on Long Island is not only season, but a state of perception. Light lingers, colors intensify, and the familiar landscape loosens into feeling.

This exhibition, curated by Lauren Skelly Bailey, brings together 16 unique painters with deep ties to Long Island who translate these fleeing summer impression into works that move between abstraction and recognition, memory, and immediacy.

Across the second floor gallery of the Performing Arts Center, artists explore color as both structure and sensation. Fields of pigment swell and dissolve, while traces of florals, beaches, sky, and water surface gently – sometimes clearly, sometimes only as a suggestion. Abstract passages pulse with heat and rhythm, while more classical landscapes notes appear transparent and porous, as if shaped by air and tide.

Rather than defining a single vision of place, the works from a quiet chorus. Together, they propose painting as a way of lingering – of noticing how summer reshapes the land and the self alike. In this conversation. Long Island becomes less a location than an atmosphere: sun-warmed, shifting, and endlessly reimagined through color.
