Utilizing An Adoption Lens In Psychotherapy
In this course, Katie Naftzger, LICSW, will discuss themes for those who are adopted, and how they impact clinical work.
She will also cover important shifts in understanding what adopted persons need in therapy, highlighting adolescence and young adulthood. Utilizing clinical examples along with research and video clips, to illustrate key mindset shifts and a way to cultivate attunement for聽therapists.聽The complexity of race and culture in transracial families will also be explored, along with specific developmental tasks for adoptees in the teen聽years聽and beyond.聽Naftzger will highlight the resource聽of narrative therapy, rebuilding identity and,聽utilizing聽goals of being authentic, empowered and connected as collaborative goals in the treatment.聽

Katie Naftzger, LICSW
Katie Naftzger, LICSW,聽Korean-adoptee, is the author of 鈥淧arenting聽in the Eye of the Storm: The Adoptive Parent鈥檚 Guide to Navigating the聽Teen Years.鈥 She has maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Newton,聽MA, for over 20 years, where she sees adoptees and families. Katie has led online groups and has two online course for adoptive parents. Currently, Katie facilitates a psychotherapy group for adult adoptees, and is developing on an online training for clinicians and organizations that serve those who are adopted.
Katie co-presented at the Westchester Institute for Training of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy,聽鈥淭he Arc of Adoption.鈥澛燢atie聽is a presenter and instructor at the Psychodynamic Couples and Family Institute of New聽England (PCFINE) in MA, where she co-teaches the 鈥渞ace in couples work鈥 course聽and was a discussant for an interracial couple鈥檚 case presentation. Katie is聽a consultant and presenter for A Home Within, a national organization that offers pro聽bono therapy for current and former foster care youth. She can be heard on the聽鈥淐reating A聽Family,鈥 podcast.
